The Comedian
Edward Blake, a.k.a The Comedian, was an original member of the Minutemen who formed the Justice League in mid-1939. Blake left the group after he had a violent altercation with Sally Jupiter (Juspeczyk), a.k.a Silk Spectre I. Despite their past differences, he had an affair with Sally years later that produced a child - Laurie Juspeczyk, a.k.a Silk Spectre II.
After a brief stint in the newly formed group the Crimebusters, formed by original Minutemen member Captain Metropolis, Blake went on to become a government mercenary agent under his alias after the Keene Act of 1977 outlawed all superhero activities. Serving in every major U.S. conflict from World War II to Vietnam with Dr. Manhattan, the Comedian was a ruthless super-soldier involved in top-secret opera-tions. The Comedian expected the worst of humanity and acted on that worldview, with his own idea of cynical humor. He thrived on chaos and had no trouble killing anyone whom he was ordered to kill.
He is typically seen wearing a smiley-face button smeared with blood, which, if viewed as a clock face, forms the exact position of the minute hand of the Doomsday Clock, which is set at five minutes to midnight.
Although amoral by nature, once he discovers a covert plan devised by Ozymandias that threatens thousands of lives, he wants to do the right thing and expose him.
